Eating With Your Eyes

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

We’ve noticed that the most popular food blogs tend to have the tastiest photographs. There is even a somewhat salacious term for this. While we can’t really dictate what makes a great shot or not, users we’ve talked to tend to like both packaging photos as well as photos of the product itself. Macro shots that give a sense of the exquisite details are popular.

We’re designing much of our website to center visually around photographs. After all, people do eat with their eyes first!

Food Blogs

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

There are over 20,000 food blogs in the U.S. alone and this corner of the Internet is growing fast (see WSJ article). It makes sense that food is a hugely popular blog topic. After all, food resonates deeply with many people, whether it’s restaurant reviews, recipes or special needs (e.g., vegan, gluten-free, Kosher). The Food Network has also proven the entertainment value of food media, elevating to celebrity status both chefs and recreational cooks with engaging personalities.

One topic we hope gets more blog and media coverage is the story behind food makers. Similar to a glowing blog review that convinces people to try a new/different restaurant, we think that blogs can really shine the light on amazing food products made by passionate folks.

As we build Foodoro, we’re thinking about how to connect not only consumers and food makers, but also the food bloggers who rave about their favorite products and makers. Stay tuned…

Building the Team

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Most successful entrepreneurs (and investors) will tell you that building the right team is the most important aspect of startup-ing. We’re pretty darn lucky to have built a founding team with deep experience at blue chip tech and consumer companies like Microsoft, eBay, Clorox, Goldman Sachs and a few startups.

Some traits we share are: an obsession with building, using—and eating—cool products; a love of good food (without being snobs); and an urge to be unconventional.

However, what makes us really click as a team is our differences. We’re a group of:

  • Dreamers and realists
  • Early risers and night owls
  • Vocal cheerleaders and reserved thinkers
  • Mac and PC enthusiasts

Somehow, it all seems to just work. Collectively, we’re gotten pretty good at playing to our strengths and recognizing our individual weaknesses.

Here are some fun tidbits about our life experiences. If you ever run into us, try and guess who’s done what:

  • One of us used to dissect human cadavers at the local morgue
  • Someone’s played a Stradivarius violin valued over $1 million at Carnegie Hall in New York—in the bathroom
  • Someone’s inner geek helped him build a ray tracer in 5 days—trust us, that’s impressive!
  • Somebody caught a monkey with his bare hands (and let him go)

Why We’re Doing This

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Many of our smart friends and colleagues have given us the “oh, that’s nice” reaction to the fifteen second version of what we’re trying to build.

Then, we show them some of our favorite food products and share the stories behind these food makers: “I had no idea that even existed. It’s SO cool!”…“That would make the perfect gift for my mom”…“Do you know where I can get…”.

That pretty much sums up why we’re doing this. There’s a lot of really good food out there. We want to help folks find it.

Welcome to Foodoro

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

The team is working around the clock to launch Foodoro.com.

What is it? Glad you asked!

We’re building a website to help people discover great food. We’re looking through the nooks and crannies of the Internet to find wonderfully tasty, sometimes crazy products. Chocolate, cheese, coffee, meat and other things you’d never imagine.

Stay tuned to this blog for updates on what’s going on at Foodoro. We’ll let you know what we’re building, how we’re doing it and listen to anything you have to say.
